This course will be held at the practice and starts at 10am, charged at £47.50  + VAT

Delegates will be able to describe normal bovine oestrus cycles and the steps involved in the establishment of pregnancy and relate this to anatomy, physiology and reproductive behaviour.  You will gain knowledge of the events from insemination to conception. Critically evaluate herd reproductive efficiency.

Categorise the major causes of infertility and the areas relating to their control.  Understand the basic aetiology and risk factors for the major infectious diseases and implement effective control plans.

Learning outcomes:

  • Name the key features of female bovine reproductive anatomy
  • Know the two phases of the oestrus cycle.
  • Name the two major, normal ovarian structures present during each phase and the hormones produced by these structures
  • Know the behavioural signs of oestrus and how this relates to the oestrus cycle
  • Understand the relationship between timing of insemination and reproductive success
  • Understand the steps involved in establishment of pregnancy
  • Understand the various measures of fertility which are available
  • Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the different measures

During September, October & November we are running a campaign to help owners recognise signs of heart problems in cats and dogs, and urging you to seek prompt attention.

Heart disease affects around 10% of cats and dogs in the UK.  Early detection is a major factor in helping to manage the condition and increase life expectancy.  Some of our most popular breeds are prone to heart disease, with the trend towards ownership of smaller dogs highlighting the problem.

Is your pet at risk?

During October, we are offering a FREE Cardiology Screen Consultation, an ideal opportunity to get your pet checked by one of our team.

In the meantime, if you have a more immediate concern, please call and ask to speak with a vet - 01363 772860.

EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome) can affect horses of all types, from racehorses to leisure horses and even foals. Ulcers may be caused by a variety of factors, including psychological stress, medications and underlying disease. Diet, feeding and management may all have a significant impact on the horses digestive health.

Signs of EGUS in adult horses include:-

  • Poor or reduced performance, including shorter stride length or a reluctance to jump, or resistance to leg aids
  • Dull or depressed appearance
  • Picky appetite, weight loss or failure to gain weight
  • Resistance to girthing, or grumpiness when groomed.

These signs are not exclusively caused by EGUS, and an examination by a vet is always recommended to rule out any other causes.

If gastric ulcers are suspected, the best way to diagnose and asses the problem is to perform a gastroscopy. Under light sedation, a 3 meter long endoscope is passed up the horses nose and down into the stomach. The entire stomach can then be assessed and any ulcers recorded and graded.

Treatment is available to resolve and prevent recurrence of gastric ulcers, and is usually required for a number of weeks. Lifelong adjustments to feeding and management may be recommended to reduce the risk of ulcers recurring.

For more information on EGUS and gastroscopy, you are invited to join us for a client evening at 7pm on Thursday 10th August at the practice in Crediton.

We are running this workshop on the safe use of dry cow therapy in conjunction with Zoetis.

Course content

Due to the increased usage of selective dry cow therapy, we thought we should focus on the correct application of Orbeseal. We will do this by going through the correct procedures and letting everyone have a go at disinfecting and administering the sealant on real udders (albeit from the slaughter house).

We can then cut into the teat afterwards to see where it has gone.

In order to check how good the teat preparation has been, we will be also be using special gels.

There will a discussion on selective dry cow therapy and dry cow management, from an udder health point of view.

We plan to follow this meeting up with another dry cow management workshop (likely a farm walk) that focuses more on metabolic diseases and BCS scoring etc.

It will be a great opportunity to check if you are using the best technique possible and to see where you are actually depositing it.

We will also discuss other management factors that have an impact on udder health on your farm.

This is great for people that have been reluctant to use selective dry cow therapy on a big scale, or for novices to Orbeseal, but also for seasoned users.

Each attendee, will receive a certificate, demonstrating that you have been taught how to properly use Orbeseal, which is often a requiement for milk contracts.

This course will cost £25 + VAT per person and includes lunch.

We aim to start around 10am.

Please, let us know asap if you are able to join us, to enable organisation of enough udders and confirm with Zoetis.
