National BVD Elimination Scheme Launches in England

BVDFree England launched their national BVD elimination scheme on 1st July.  This is an industry-led scheme designed to eliminate BVD virus from all cattle herds in the country by 2022.

BVDFree England will develop a national database, storing individual and herd test results for scheme members.

BVDFree is based on achieving the elimination of BVD through identification and removal of animals persistently infected (PIs) with BVD.

Part 1 - Mastitis reduces fertility...

...you probably knew that already but it is always useful when robust research backs up common sense and more importantly allows us to quantify the problem.

In the next few articles, we are going to run through:-

  1. A recently published study on the effect of mastitis on fertility and improving outcome with NSAIDs

  2. What happens to the fertility of cows with mastitis?

  3. What effect can Metacam have on cows affected by mastitis?

  4. What does this mean for me?

Get Comfortable for an Easier Life

Farm vet, Chris Just, of St Boniface Vets, discusses a few ways to make your cows more comfortable - happy cows means happy farmers.

"A mentor of mine always said 'Get your cows comfortable and everything else will fall into place'.

For the majority of herds that is straight forward enough during grazing season. For grazing cows, comfort will be all about your tracks/gateways and keeping milking time short and stress free.

Ovum Pick Up / In Vitro Embryo Production (OPU / IVP)

Ovum Pick Up is a much newer technique and is only available through a handful of practices in the country, of which we are one.

In this case, only the eggs are removed from the donor animal and the fertilisation takes place in a laboratory rather than inside the cow.  The cow has to come to us for the OPU session, as everything has to be heat controlled.

Under epidural, an ultrasound probe is placed into the vagina along with a needle and guide, so that eggs can be taken from ovarian follicles and collected into a test tube.

Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer MOET

Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer (MOET), a conventional embryo flush, is the most common procedure used in advanced cattle breeding.

It involves a 5 week superovulation program, resulting in several eggs being released from the donor cow, as opposed to one during a natural heat.  The cow is inseminated and embryos are then flushed from the cow's uterus the following week.  This involves placing a catheter through the cervix and into the uterus, where a cuff is inflated and fluid is flushed in and out to collect the embryos from each horn.
