Top Tips for Travelling with your Pet

Our pets are part of our family, so taking them on days out, or even on holiday with us, comes naturally. Yet, at times, the reality is very different.

In order to make the whole experience stress free for you and your pet, we have put together some top tips for travelling.

Planning ahead can take the hassle away, so here are some great ideas for a more comfortable journey and one that you will want to take again!

Before your Trip

  • Ensure your pet is microchipped, this is now a requirement by law.
  • Book in with a vet for a health check if taking your pet on holiday.
  • Make sure all vaccinations are up to date, any member of our admin team can assist with this enquiry - we can even provide you with a print out to take with you.
  • Take your pet on short journeys, to get them used to travelling in the car.  If they get a little travel sick, your vet can help you with remedies to try.

Car Journey

  • If your dog travels loose in the rear of the car, fit a dog guard and non-slip floor.
  • Provide your pet with water at all times, non-spill bowls are very popular - pop into the practice, to take a look at the options we have available.
  • NEVER leave your dog in a hot car, as they could easily get heatstroke.

Routine

  • All pets like routine, take a favourite toy / blanket with you to help them feel at home.
  • Whilst you are away, try and stick to your daily walks - remember to test the temperature of the tarmac, it can get very warm in the summer months.
  • Try and take your dog for a walk when the temperature is cooler - you will both enjoy the time out in the fresh air much more appealing.

Dinner Time

  • Ensure you take your normal food with you on holiday; changes to diet can upset your pet’s tummy very easily.
  • Try and avoid too many tempting treats! Instead, take a small bag of their normal food out with you and give as a treat when required NB Please remember that you will need to deduct this food from their daily allowance.
  • Scraps from dinner, are very tempting for family members to pass onto our pets, please help them to help your pet, by avoiding this bad habit.
  • If your pet is prone to a sensitive tummy, keep some treatment for digestive upsets handy, this is available from reception in both cats and dogs – there is no need to make an appointment.

If you would like to run through any of the above in more detail, please call the practice and make an appointment with one of our nursing team – 01363 772860.
