Helpful Hints during the Hot Weather

Please read below for advice on heat stroke, how to cool your dog, rabbit and guinea pigs, plus the signs of dehydration

How to cool off your dog on a hot day:

1. Offer a cool pack or wet towel for them to lay on
2. Put ice cubes in their water bowl
3. Dip their paws in said water bowl (Dogs sweat through their paws)
4. Offer access to a paddling pool with shallow, cool water
5. Early morning and late evening walks (DO NOT EXERCISE YOUR DOG IN THIS HEAT)
6. Make homemade frozen treats with gravy for example

Know the signs of heatstroke in dogs:

1. Very high temperature
2. Rapid breathing/panting
3. Excess salivation
4. Fatigue or depression
5. Muscle tremors
6. Staggering
7. Collapse

Know the signs of dehydration:

1. Sunken eyes
2. Lethargy
3. Dry mouth
4. Depression
5. If you gently pinch a fold of skin on the back of the neck, is it slow to snap back?

How to help your guinea pigs and rabbits in hot weather:

1. Bring them indoors
2. Offer a cool pack (frozen water bottle) wrapped in a tea towel for them to lay next to/on top of to cool down 
3. Put Ice cubes in their water bowl/water bottle
4. Feed them fresh, refrigerated veggies
5. Get a fan and face it into the hutch
6. Wet down rabbit’s ears
7. Cover the hutch with wet towels
8. Ensure long coats are trimmed and maintained

Finally when it comes to cats they tend to be sensible and stay indoors or lay in the shade outside, but please check your greenhouses/sheds to ensure a cat hasn't wondered in.  If you are concerned, please call us ASAP 01363 772860.
