The role of the Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)

The Veterinary Nurse role is widely variable and covers everything from seeing your pet in a Nurse Consultation through to monitoring their anaesthetic during a surgical procedure. 

Nurses are responsible for:

  • Blood sampling patients
  • Placing intravenous cannulas
  • Providing and monitoring intravenous fluid therapy
  • Administering medications
  • Monitoring anaesthesia
  • Recovering from anaesthesia
  • Ensuring you receive all the correct medications and are comfortable with how to administer them when you take your beloved pet home
  • Providing telephone advice and support for any concerns you may have about your pet
  • Microchipping
  • And some vaccinations

They are also able to perform minor surgical procedures such as:

  • Scaling and polishing teeth (not including extractions)
  • Minor wound repairs (not entering the abdominal cavity)

As well as all of the above, nurses also ensure that your pet receives all TLC as they would if they were at home.
