With the change in seasons comes a change in weather, and with that, potentially, a change in your arthritic pet’s comfort levels.
As rainy weather sets in, atmospheric pressure drops and the joint capsule starts to stretch, stimulating nerves to trigger a feeling of tightness and pain. So, our older furry friends start to feel more uncomfortable both walking and in general day to day activities.
As part of our awareness of this change, and to help our friends over the winter period, we are running a series of Facts about Arthritis. You may think they’re ‘just slowing down’ or they’re ‘a bit limpy, but never seem in pain’. In reality, they may be quite sore and putting on a brave face. We limp because we have a sore joint and our faithful pets are the same, they just don’t moan like us!
This week, we bring you Part 1 - Symptoms of Arthritis
Symptoms of Degenerative Joint Disease in Pets can be difficult to appreciate, as our furry friends do not vocalise pain and may have very stoic personalities.
As a pet owner, you must seek out pain relief if you notice any of the following changes; abnormal gait patterns, problems with jumping into or out of the car, reluctance to go up and down stairs, difficulty rising from a lying down position and lameness. Other signs include weight gain, a reluctance to exercise, vocalising and showing pain when touched or moved.
Degenerative joint disease, or arthritis, is progressive and is far easier to slow and manage if caught early.
Our Winter Awareness Campaign is running through December, January and February; make an appointment and let one of our Vets review how your pet is coping this Winter. Please keep checking our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages for the latest Facts, or you can give us a ring for advice.
Look out for our promotions over the coming months.
