Itchy...?

Monday, 8 June 2015 - 12:23pm

It is that time of year again when we start to see seasonal allergies flaring up in our pets.  There are many different causes of scratching but allergic dermatitis is by far the most common – the challenge is to try to discover exactly what the allergy is to – not always easy!  Being very itchy can be really debilitating for your pet, and can lead to lots of other skin complaints – especially skin infections due to self trauma.  In cats, over-grooming, and licking bald spots, especially on their tummy and down their back legs is often the first sign we see.  You may not realise but it is NEVER normal for your pet to scratch!

We see a real resurgence of fleas at this time of year too – make sure your flea care routine is up to date – we are happy to chat through all the options with you regarding products – there are many different types to suit you and the temperament of your pet!

If you notice any redness, scratching, licking or biting book an appointment and we will discuss all the options with you.  We may need to take skin scrapes to check for creepy crawlies in the skin too.  Please note that many skin conditions are something we can only manage and not completely cure – especially the seasonal ones – so being on top of the condition earlier rather than later is a lot more comfortable for your pet, and cheaper on your pocket than waiting until the situation has deteriorated!
