As many of you will know England is lagging behind the rest of Europe including Scotland and Ireland in eradicating/controlling BVD.
Since BVD can cause:
- Ill Thrift
- Reduced Fertility
- Abortions
- Sub fertility in Bulls
- Scour and Pneumonia in calves
It's impact on farm can be very significant.
The BVD free campaign is an industry wide campaign to reduce the level of BVD in the English cattle herd.
So what happens next?
Knowing your status is key to making a plan - the best way to do this is to Blood sample 5 young stock from each management group over 9 months old - we believe the impact of BVD is so important that we will do this at your next TB test unless you decide against it.
If bloods are taken at a TB test cost is only £27 for 5 samples.
Even vaccinated herds should be checking as vaccine breakdowns can and do occur.
If you want to discuss either the testing or BVD speak to Ruth at the practice or email the farm team. Alternatively, please click on the following links to view the leaflet on BVD and Biosecurity.
Moving Forward
Once we know whether you have BVD in your herd we can make a plan to either get rid of it or keep it out.
