Confirmed case of Equine Herpes Virus in Devon

Friday, 19 February 2016 - 8:58am

We have recently become aware, that there is a confirmed case of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) at a local yard, and understandably many of you have called us for advice.

Equine Herpes Virus may cause respiratory disease, most commonly in youngstock.  Less common symptoms are abortion in pregnant mares, and rarely neurological signs.

Signs of respiratory disease due to EHV-1 infection include:-

  • High temperature
  • Cough
  • Nasal Discharge
  • Generally unwell or off food

EHV is most commonly spread by inhaling droplets from an infected horse coughing or snorting.  Infected horses usually shed the virus for 7-10 days but may be much longer, so after diagnosis, a 28 day isolation period is usually advised.  The virus may also live in the environment for a couple of weeks and be spread on clothing, tack and yard equipment.

After infection, clinical signs are usually seen after 4-6 days, but this can be very variable

To prevent the spread of EHV, biosecurity is key.  Affected animals should be isolated and movement on and off the yard stopped until advised by your vet.  If you are concerned that your horse is showing signs of a respiratory infection, please contact the practice for a visit to examine and test if appropriate - 01363 772860.
